Inspiration: A River Somewhere

I recently re-discovered a nice TV documentary series focused on fly fishing and travel from 1997, 1998 titled “A River Somewhere”.

The series features Rob Sitch and Tom Gleisner - Australian comedians behind the much-loved film “The Castle” and numerous popular comedy series. “A River Somewhere” focuses on Rob and Tom’s fly fishing trips throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

I remember watching the series when it first aired on Australian television. At the time, I enjoyed the lighthearted mood and the humour that Rob and Tom brought, while still showing something of the beauty of wild places as well as their genuine love of fly fishing.

Revisiting the series now, I appreciate the unpretentiousness of it. It’s a lovely journal of two mates’ fishing trips. It inspires me to plan small fishing sojourns; sidenotes in a busy life.

Of note is the soundtrack to this series; mostly accoustic guitar, some harmonica. Simple, earthy, warm, at times a feeling of achingly poignancy. Lovely.

You can purchase and watch the “A River Somewhere” on the Working Dog Productions website.

There are some previews of the show on YouTube, including a mashup of all the fish Rob and Tom caught in season 1.

April Vokey also did a lovely interview with Rob Sitch about “A River Somewhere” and fly fishing generally on her “Anchored with April Vokey” podcast.
